Egg Waffle Experiment

Last weekend my middle sister, Vanessa, came to visit and she brought a new kitchen gadget with her for us to try out – an egg waffle iron.  I was a little hesitant at first when she said we should make egg waffles seeing as I hate most egg-related meals, but luckily the egg reference to these waffles is purely related to the rounded shapes that this iron forms.

Here is the nifty waffle iron that Vanessa bought from Williams-Sonoma.

This is the recipe that we used for the waffles.

And this is how our delicious waffles turned out:

The only change we’ll make in the future is to double the batch so that we can enjoy more waffles!

Poinsettia Blues

ImageEach year around the end of January, I’m faced with the same dilemma – what do I do with my poinsettia?  I feel bad throwing out a plant that’s trying so hard to live, but at the same time, I feel like poinsettias are too festive to keep past the Christmas season.  So…what to do…

I felt sorry enough for it this week to offer it some water, so I guess I’ll have to revisit this debate next week when it’s dried out and sagging.

Week 9: March 6, 2012 – The Key to Coolness

Ever sit at home cuddling your cats and wondering how to become cool?  Well wonder no longer, because I’ve discovered the key to coolness – it’s a pair of Bensimon sneakers.  And how, you may ask, did I discover this?  From reading an article in the Wayare Magazine (http://wayfaremag.com/), silly!  It seems like if you have a pair of these puppies, you’ll become a world traveler, an amazing blogger and freelance writer, and just a generally cool person.  That’s what I got from the article anyways.  I have yet to feel any difference in my life since my purchase on the weekend, but I’ll let you know once the coolness kicks in.

Do I actually believe Bensimon shoes make people cool?  No, not really.  But they are pretty cute, they were the last pair in my size, and they were on sale at Gravity Pope, so that pretty much decided it for me. Besides, how do you actually pronounce Bensimon?  Ben-simon?  Or do you say it quickly with a French accent?

Now I’m just waiting for the snow to melt so I can actually wear them!

Week 8: February 26, 2012 – Snow Icing

After the biggest dump of snow we’ve had this year in Edmonton, it’s no surprise that it’s the subject of this week’s photo.  I love the way the snow outlines the posts on the ancient white picket fence in our backyard.  I’m not a fan of snow (or shovelling), but it is rather pretty.

And for a view of our front yard, check our the icing coated mushroom tree.

Week 7: February 19, 2012 – Baby Dedication Day!

Today my 11 month old nephew, Gavin, was dedicated at Sherwood Park Alliance Church.  It was a special day for the little guy and he performed perfectly, cuing the congregation to let out ‘Ooos’ and ‘Awes’ as he ate the corner of the church bulletin.  I had fully intended on getting a picture of Gavin looking spiffy in his church outfit of white shirt and tie, but he didn’t last long at home in his fancy duds and he was changed into this more personality-appropriate outfit – a Hatley superhero sleeper.

Week 6: February 12, 2012 – Volleyball Cheer Team

Every Thursday Matt and his two younger brothers play volleyball on a men’s rec team at the GO Centre.  Since this past week’s game was at a reasonable time of 7:15 pm (rather than starting at 9 or 9:30 pm!) I decided to go watch.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never really understood the phenomena behind the “hand slap” (as being demonstrated in the picture).  This hand slap happens after the team scores a point and also after they lose the opportunity to score a point.  How does that make sense?  Why would you want to reinforce bad plays?  I think some quality heckling may be more beneficial than a hand slap.  Then again I never played on a team sport…

As a bonus feature to this post, I’ve included a picture of my view from the bleachers.  Can you say “hungry bum?”  Seriously, how does the ref not feel this??
